WLW Bands Defined

Concert Band

Concert Band is for 9-12 grade students. This class is offered as a natural progression from middle school into high school. All students entering 9th grade will be placed in Concert Band. After their first year in band, they may audition for Symphony Band or Wind Ensemble. Any student with an instrumental background may elect this class. Students electing this class can earn 1.0 credits toward graduation and are committed for a full year. Percussionists should enroll in Class Percussion (General Music). This class is only open to experienced percussionists and will develop technique on all percussion instruments.

Symphony Band

Symphony Band is the second band level at Western. All students must be auditioned by Mr. Dudzinski prior to the start of school to be accepted into this ensemble. The band is composed of 9 – 12 grade students. Students electing this class can earn 1.0 credits toward graduation and are committed for a full year. Percussionists should enroll in Class Percussion (General Music). This class is only open to experienced percussionists and will develop technique on all percussion instruments.

Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is the most advanced band at Western. All students must pass a playing audition to participate in this ensemble. The band is composed of 10-12 grade students. Students electing this class can earn 1.0 credits toward graduation and are committed for a full year. Percussionists should enroll in Class Percussion (General Music). This class is only open to experienced percussionists and will develop technique on all percussion instruments.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band is another wonderful venue available to all students that participate in band at Western. All students must be enrolled in a performance driven music class to participate. This class offers students a chance to explore the many unique styles of jazz and perform in many venues outside of Western High School.

Marching Band

The Marching Band is the most visible ensemble. The band performs at festivals, parades, and football games thoughout the year. Students have the opportunity to earn 0.5 credits toward graduation for each year they are enrolled in the class. Students must also participate in an instrumental music class.

An additional part of the marching band is the color guard. These students spin flags which contributes a vital component to the visual production. Students do not need to be a member of an instrumental music class to participate. Students participating in color guard will have the opportunity to earn 0.5 credits toward graduation and should select Marching Band on their schedule. Students must audition in the Spring.

All students participating in Marching Band must attend Marching Band Camp in August.
